Dr. John Withers grew up in the United States during a time when the country was deeply divided by segregation.  Despite these factors, he dedicated his life to pursuing higher education.  However, after achieving both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree, Lieutenant Withers was drafted in to the army, and he suddenly found himself fighting overseas for freedoms that he himself did not fully enjoy at home.  Perhaps this is the reason he suddenly found himself risking the possibility of obtaining his Ph.D. to help hide and rehabilitate two Jewish survivors of the Holocaust who had faced their own form or persecution.

Dr. John Withers II is the son of Lieutenant John Withers.  John is also the person responsible for reuniting his father with Peewee, the Jewish survivor that his father's unit hid for over a year after the end of the war.  As a young child listening to his father's war stories, he often heard him speak fondly of two Jewish boys that lived and worked with his unit.  Unfortunately, after the war, Lieutenant Withers and the two boys never kept contact with each other.  But due to the research of John, Lieutenant Withers was able to find out just what happened to the two boys that marked such an important point in his life.
