| Lt. Withers worried about
hiding Peewee and Salomon because he risked a dishonorable
discharge from the Armed Forces. Allowing civilians
on a military base in wartime conditions was strictly
forbidden due to the risk of espionage or sabotage. In
addition, Lt. Withers and his men were given strict orders
to not associate with former concentration camp prisoners
due to the risk of contagious disease. The military could
have charged Lt. Withers with a crime and put him on trial
had the boys been discovered.
Receiving a dishonorable discharge
would have denied Lt. Withers veteran benefits such
as health and unemployment insurance. Loss of
the coveted G.I. Bill, which funded veterans' future
education, would have dealt a crushing blow to Lt. Wither's
dream of pursuing a Ph.D. For Lt. Withers and
his men, it was a huge risk to save Peewee and Salomon,
but it was a risk they felt was worth taking.
