Shouldering the Responsibility:
The Story of Josef Motschmann

Josef Motschmann is a German, Catholic high school teacher from Northern Bavaria. Born after WWII, he had never known the rich Jewish heritage and history his town possessed. Noticing a neglected Jewish cemetery in his town, he sought to re-discover this history and restore many Jewish sites in the town.

This exhibit, developed by The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education in its second year of operation, is about role models, the theme of Holocaust Awareness Weeks 2002. Thirteen thirty by forty inch foam core panels present a simple direct narrative that can be appreciated at multiple levels of awareness an understanding. Josef Motschmann, portrayed as a charismatic cartoon character, guides audiences through photos, poems and stories that reflect the power of an individual to create positive change and the strength of moral accountability. The storyline is a carefully researched documentation of the transformation of a town through an honest discovery of its historic and cultural heritage.
