Stephen & Lusia Hornstein Lecture on the Holocaust and the Human Spirit

November 19, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

In partnership with Wise Temple, author and journalist, Helen Epstein will speak about her collaboration in writing Looking Back, the unusual memoir of  Holocaust survivor and physician, Paul Ornstein who became prominent in American psychoanalysis and a leader of the psychoanalytic Self Psychology movement.  After surviving the Holocaust in Hungary, he received his degree in medicine from the University of Heidelberg, then emigrated to the United States and became a leading figure in psychoanalytic self-psychology. He and his wife, Dr. Anna Ornstein spent most of their adult lives in Cincinnati and were friends with Stephen and Lusia Hornstein.

Born in Prague in 1947, Helen Epstein grew up in the Czech community of New York City. She attended Hunter College High School, then studied at CCNY for two years before transferring to and graduating from Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1970. She became an instant published journalist during the summer of 1968 while a 20-year-old college student caught in the Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia. Her personal account of the invasion was published in the Jerusalem Post where she received her journalistic training while an undergraduate studying musicology and literature. Helen has gone on to author, co-author, and translate or edit ten books of narrative non-fiction including the ground-breaking memoir Children of the Holocaust, which broke the silence of the children of Holocaust survivors.

Paul Ornstein passed away in 2016.  This program will pay tribute to his life and legacy.
