The Spirit of Tafari Film Premier

May 7, 2014 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

“The Spirit of Tafari” tells the story of one youth who wandered into Elementz three years ago, a decision that changed the direction of his life. Putting “hard times” and “bad decisions” behind him, Tafari McDade used music to find his own identity and eventually developed into a well-respected hip hop artist. Along the way, the documentary shows the adults who gave him a helping hand, including his Mom, his sisters, and quite unexpectedly, Holocaust survivor Werner Coppel. Werner came to Elementz for several weeks last summer to learn filmmaking and developed a friendship with Tafari during the course of the making of the documentary. Their relationship is included in the film.

Nine months in the making, the documentary is a collaborative effort with Temple Sholom of Amberley Village, technical assistance from CET and UC’s eMedia Department, all under the direction of Elementz Creative Director Abdullah Powell.

Tafari’s album release and the first showing of the video documentary about Tafari’s journey will occur at the Esquire Theatre on Wednesday, May 7th, 7:30 p.m. The release is co-sponsored by Temple Sholom and UC’s EMedia Division. The event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is requested at https://elementz.cincyregister.com/spirit.
