Brundibar & Emperor of Atlantis

BEIn partnership with The Cincinnati Chamber Opera, performances will include two operas composed or performed at the ghetto Theresienstadt during World War II. Depicting thinly-veiled allegories of struggle against evil emperors and tyrants, these works reminded children and adults alike that good can always triumph over evil. Brundibár, the children’s opera by Hans Krása, was originally performed at an orphanage in Prague; one-by-one, the cast and crew were sent to the ghetto where they reunited, performing the piece over 55 times. The music gave the children a make-believe world where the powerless win over the powerful. Emperor of Atlantis, composed by Viktor Ullmann while imprisoned at Theresienstadt, is a dark, allegorical story with a message of peace. Though intended to be performed at Theresienstadt, the opera was banned by the Nazi regime.
