Meet Our Upstander Finalist: Michael Moore

Michael Moore has turned life’s challenges into meaningful advocacy, using his experiences to inspire inclusion, expand opportunities, and strengthen communities. Growing up on Cincinnati’s west side, he often found himself the only Black student in his private school classrooms, facing isolation and exclusion that made clear he was not expected to belong. Rather than allowing those experiences to define him, Michael chose to rise above them, first by standing up for himself, and ultimately bydedicating his life to standing up for others.

What could have been a source of limitation instead became the foundation of his purpose. In 2020, Michael founded Black Achievers to ensure that African Americans would no longer have to navigate education, careers, and entrepreneurship alone. What began as a vision has grown into a national movement, now serving more than 10,000 members in Cincinnati and over 400,000 individuals across 24 cities. Through this work, he has created spaces where people are not only welcomed but empowered to succeed.

Michael’s impact is both profound and measurable. Through mentorship, professional development, and a powerful network of leaders, he has helped more than 100 individuals launch businesses, guided over 500 emerging leaders through structured programs, mentored more than 700 high school students, and supported over 200 individuals in securing employment. Each year, more than 20,000 people attend Black Achievers events nationwide, gaining access to opportunity, confidence, and community.

His leadership extends far beyond one organization. Michael is the author of Achieve Your Dreams, a recipient of the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, and a recognized civic leader serving on multiple boards, including the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Freestore Foodbank, Salvation Army, and Warsaw Federal Bank. His work has been recognized by the Cincinnati Chamber as one of Seven Leaders Making a Difference, reflecting his far-reaching influence.

Michael Moore does more than create opportunities. He transforms lives. Through his vision, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice, he continues to open doors, elevate others, and build a future where everyone has the chance to achieve their full potential.
