The late Francie Pepper, recipient of the Upstander Legacy Award, was honored for a lifetime of advocacy, philanthropy, and unwavering dedication to women, families, and the Greater Cincinnati community.
Some people leave a mark on their community that continues to inspire long after they’re gone. Frances “Francie” Pepper was one of those extraordinary people.
At this year’s Upstander Awards, we were honored to present the Upstander Legacy Award to Francie Pepper, recognizing a lifetime of leadership, generosity, and unwavering commitment to making Cincinnati a stronger, more compassionate community.
A renowned advocate, philanthropist, and champion for women and families, Francie dedicated her life to serving others. Throughout her decades of civic leadership, she brought people together around causes that mattered most, helping countless organizations grow their impact while inspiring others to give back.
Among her many accomplishments, Francie led the YWCA’s landmark 1995 campaign to establish a shelter for battered women and children—a transformational effort that expanded safety, support, and hope for families experiencing crisis. Her advocacy advanced opportunities for women and strengthened the fabric of our region in lasting ways.
Her extraordinary contributions earned widespread recognition, including being named a Great Living Cincinnatian in 2014. Yet those who knew Francie remember her not only for her accomplishments, but for her compassion, generosity, and genuine care for others.
The Upstander Legacy Award honors individuals whose impact will be felt for generations, and Francie embodies that spirit. Her influence lives on through the organizations she strengthened, the lives she touched, and the example she set through a lifetime of service.
We were privileged to welcome John Pepper, Francie’s husband, to accept the award on her behalf. His presence served as a moving reminder that while Francie is no longer with us, her legacy continues to inspire all of us to lead with courage, compassion, and purpose.
As we celebrate this year’s Upstander Legacy Award, we also celebrate a life devoted to lifting others up. Francie Pepper showed us what it means to be an upstander, and her example will continue to guide our community for generations to come.
