“When the Nazis invaded Poland, my mother was 13, and she was looking forward to going to high school. But that never really happened, and at that young age, she, like everyone else, had to become a slave laborer for the Nazis, because otherwise you didn’t get food rations, and that was the only way to survive.” – Daughter of Holocaust survivors, Sandy Kaltman
In this episode of Hear My Story, Sandy Kaltman shares the remarkable story of her parents, Roma and Sam Kaltman, Holocaust survivors from Lodz, Poland. Roma and Sam survived multiple camps, including Auschwitz, and yet Sandy says they were somehow able to put the horrors of the Holocaust behind them and become loving parents and proud Americans.
Sandy reflects on her family’s journey from the ghettos and camps of Europe to new lives in Cincinnati, and on the lasting legacy they built through Holocaust education and community. This powerful conversation reminds us of the importance of memory, storytelling, and standing up against hate.
