On the opening weekend of Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away., join the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center and Cincinnati Museum Center for a special program amplifying Cincinnati’s connections to this landmark exhibition.

The panel discussion will feature exhibition curators, museum partners, and descendants of Holocaust survivors who built new lives in Cincinnati. Together, they will reflect on the process of bringing the exhibition to Union Terminal, explore the ways local survivor stories resonate within the exhibition, and consider how our community continues to carry forward lessons of resilience and humanity.

Following the panel discussion in Reakirt Auditorium, guests are invited to a special conversation in the CrEATe Culinary Studio featuring the Kroger Lab. Steve Coppel and Ron Coppel, sons of Holocaust survivors Werner and Trudy Coppel, will share their family’s story while recreating their mother Trudy’s cherished plum cake recipe. They will reflect on the meaningful connections between food, family, memory, and legacy. Guests will have the opportunity to sample the plum cake and take home special survivor recipe cards created for this program.

Not far away. was created by Musealia in cooperation with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and curated by an international panel of experts, including world-renowned scholars Dr. Robert Jan van Pelt, Dr. Michael Berenbaum and Paul Salmons, in an unprecedented collaboration with historians and curators at the Research Center at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, led by Dr. Piotr Setkiewicz. Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. opens October 18, 2025 at Union Terminal. The opportunity to bring this impactful exhibition to Cincinnati has been generously supported by Rhonda and Larry Sheakley, the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, the Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati, and the Ohio Holocaust and Genocide Memorial and Education Commission.

Little Acts, Big Impact: Mini Upstander Play Sessions with the Children’s Theatre

Join us for “Little Acts, Big Impact: Mini Upstander Play Sessions” in partnership with the Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati every second Saturday at 10 a.m. at Union Terminal! This special event series features fun, games, and songs led by talented artists from the Children’s Theatre. Each session will focus on highlighting a specific character strength, fostering a positive and engaging environment for children.

While the little ones immerse themselves in creative and educational activities, parents will have the opportunity to explore our museum. As an added bonus, families who attend the session will be offered free admission into Cincinnati Museum Center Children’s Museum for the day.

Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to inspire mini upstanders and create lasting memories with your family. This event series is presented in partnership with Cincinnati Museum Center and the Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati.

The Power of Remembering: A Conversation on Holocaust Education

Bernd Kruse was a classroom teacher in Furstenau, Germany, when one day, a student told him they found a tombstone in the middle of the woods. This discovery set Bernd on a life path he never would have predicted. After extensive research over many years, Bernd pieced together the dark story of the destruction of the Jewish community of Furstenau. Now, set on a path of education, raising awareness and most importantly, honoring and remembering those who were murdered, Berndt brings this story to light.

Walter Frank was born in Kaiserslautern, Germany, February 10, 1937. Walter’s parents, Karl and Thecla, decided to flee Germany from fear of what the Nazis might–and eventually did–do. Though Walter’s parents urged the whole family to flee, they could not convince anyone else to leave except for one sister. Walter’s grandparents lived in Furstenau. Of the family who remained in Germany, all were murdered.

This program will bring together Bernd Kruse and Walter Frank in a conversation about the importance of Holocaust education and the power remembering.

Nancy & David Wolf Lectureship: Too Little, Too Late: Nazi Trials in Postwar Germany with Dr. Rebecca Wittmann

Join the Northern Kentucky University Salmon P. Chase College of Law in partnership with the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center for the Nancy & David Wolf Lectureship: Too Little, Too Late: Nazi Trials in Postwar Germany with Dr. Rebecca Wittmann. Dr. Wittmann will examine the German justice system’s failure to address mass atrocities from the postwar period to the present. Through key trials such as Auschwitz, Majdanek, Stammheim, and Demjanjuk, she will uncover the systemic legal obstacles that allowed Nazi perpetrators to evade justice.

Following her lecture, Dr. Wittmann will engage in a conversation with Dr. Sarah Crane, visiting professor of Holocaust & Genocide Studies at the University of Cincinnati, and Dr. Jack Harrison, the David and Nancy Wolf Chair in Ethics and Professional Identity at NKU’s Chase College of Law.

Join us for the annual Stephen and Lusia Hornstein Lecture on the Holocaust and the Human Spirit at historic Union Terminal. This year’s featured speaker is Dr. Hedy Wald, Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

The Lancet Commission on Medicine, Nazism, and the Holocaust urges the integration of Holocaust history into health professions education to foster morally resilient, history-informed practitioners. Confronting the ethical violations committed by health professionals under Nazism is essential to cultivating moral leadership, countering antisemitism and all forms of discrimination, and upholding human dignity.

In this lecture, Dr. Hedy Wald—medical educator and daughter of a Holocaust survivor—explores this dark chapter through both personal and professional lenses. She shares her experience co-leading a study trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau with Germany’s Witten-Herdecke Faculty of Health for medical and psychology students, highlighting its impact and the growing adoption of similar initiatives in the United States.

This session underscores the contemporary relevance of this history for all health professionals, offering compelling historical examples of moral courage and resistance. It invites reflection on core values and aims to strengthen ethical awareness for humanistic healthcare and global citizenship.

Dr. Hedy Wald is Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Faculty, Harvard Medical School Pediatrics Leadership Program, Commissioner; Lancet Commission on Medicine, Nazism, and the Holocaust, and Adjunct Professor, Oakland University School of Nursing.
