In February 2026, the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center will host Dr. Jake Desai-Newsome for a thought-provoking and informative multimedia presentation about the German LGBTQ+ community under Nazi rule.

As we prepare to welcome Dr. Desai-Newsome, here are five things to know before his talk.

Meet the Speaker: Dr. Jake Desai-Newsome

Dr. Jake Desai-Newsome (he/him) is an award-winning historian, educator, and advocate whose work has shaped global understanding of LGBTQ+ history. Through his research, writing, and public education efforts, he helps diverse audiences discover why LGBTQ+ history is essential to understanding human rights today.

His Groundbreaking Book: Pink Triangle Legacies

His debut book, Pink Triangle Legacies: Coming Out in the Shadow of the Holocaust, looks back at the history of the Nazi’s targeted violence toward LGBTQ+ people. He also traces the transformation of the pink triangle from a Nazi concentration camp badge and symbol of discrimination, into a widespread, recognizable emblem of queer pride, and community. Drawing from nearly 30 original interviews, he amplifies a wide range of queer voices and illustrates the lasting emotional and political impact of the pink triangle across generations.

Advancing Inclusive, Accurate LGBTQ+ Education

Beyond his book, Dr. Desai-Newsome has conducted influential research to improve how educators teach LGBTQ+ history. His work is helping classrooms adopt informed, inclusive, and dynamic language. His published work also includes a widely used report on fair compensation practices for academic speakers, offering support and transparency for graduate students, early-career scholars, and independent researchers.

Other works of his have been published in outlets like The Washington Post, and he has appeared on podcasts including Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness.

Leadership and Advocacy: The Pink Triangle Legacies Project

Dr. Desai-Newsome founded the Pink Triangle Legacies Project in 2024. It’s a grassroots initiative with the goal of honoring the memory of the Nazis’ LGBTQ+ victims and carrying their legacy forward. The project produces educational resources, builds community among queer people and allies, and empowers the public to identify modern threats to LGBTQ+ safety and dignity.
